The charge
What authors pay, and when
The article processing charge is USD 1,200. It is invoiced only after a manuscript has been accepted for publication.
Submitting a manuscript is free of charge, and a manuscript that is declined carries no charge at all. Readers pay nothing: every article is open access from the day it appears. The terms that apply when authors take a manuscript back are set out under withdrawal below.
Payment has no bearing on any editorial decision. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal, and they are independent of article processing charges, membership, editorial or reviewer roles, and any paid service.
What it covers
What the charge pays for
The charge covers the work of turning an accepted manuscript into a permanent, findable article and keeping it available.
- Editorial handling
- Screening, assignment to an editor with relevant expertise, coordination of independent peer review, and the handling of revisions through to a decision. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
- Production
- Copyediting, typesetting, figure preparation and the production of the published formats.
- Registration and metadata
- Registration of a DOI under the publisher prefix 10.14302, and the deposit of article metadata so the article can be found and cited.
- Hosting and preservation
- Publication and continued hosting of the article, and its inclusion in the publisher's digital-preservation arrangements.

Billing
How the invoice works
An invoice is issued to the corresponding author, or to the institution or funder the corresponding author nominates, after the decision to accept.
The amount is stated and payable in United States dollars. Where an institution or funder is paying, the corresponding author supplies the billing details at acceptance so the invoice can be addressed correctly. Any charge, duty or bank fee that a payer's own jurisdiction or bank applies is settled by the payer.
Questions about an invoice, about payment arrangements, or about fee relief for a specific manuscript are answered by the editorial office at [email protected]. Correspondence about billing is handled separately from the editorial assessment of the manuscript and reaches the editor handling it only as a decision about the invoice.
Withdrawal
Withdrawing a submitted manuscript
Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.
Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.
Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal's APC.
Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
