What membership is
Membership is an optional, voluntary association with the journal. It supports the open-access publishing that makes every article free to read, and it connects people working across sleep science, sleep medicine and circadian research.
Membership sits alongside the journal’s editorial work rather than inside it. A member submits manuscripts the same way anyone else does, through the same submission routes, and those manuscripts are read by the same editors against the same criteria.
It is also distinct from the article processing charge. The charge is levied per accepted manuscript and is set by the article type; membership is an annual relationship with the journal. The charge and its terms are on the article processing charges page.
02 · Independence
What membership leaves unchanged
This is the part worth stating plainly, because it is the part a reader has most reason to want confirmed.
Membership and editorial judgment are separate
Editorial decisions are independent of payment, membership and any service purchased from the publisher. A member’s manuscript is screened, reviewed and decided exactly as any other manuscript is.
Membership confers no advantage in the review or acceptance of a member’s own work. It brings no priority in the queue, no faster handling, no privileged access to an editor and no influence over a decision.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
- A member’s manuscript enters the same screening process as every other submission.
- Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
- An editor who is also a member and who is an author on a submission stands aside from its assessment, which is handled by an independent editor.

03 · Terms
Categories, terms and how to join
Membership categories, the annual charge for each, the term, eligibility and any renewal conditions are confirmed by the editorial office, which also arranges enrollment.
Write to the editorial office with the category you are interested in — individual, center or institutional — and the office will confirm the current terms that apply and how to proceed.
