The routes
Three ways to submit
All three reach the same editorial office and the same process. Choose the one that suits how you work.
- Primary route ManuscriptZone — the publisher's submission system, which tracks the manuscript through review and holds the correspondence in one place.
- Alternative route Simple manuscript submission form — a single page that opens with Journal of Zoological Research already selected, for authors who would rather not create an account.
- Assisted route The editorial office, at [email protected] — attach the files to an email and the office will enter the submission.
Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript.
Submitting is free of charge by any route. The article processing charge applies only after a manuscript has been accepted.
Before you start
What to have ready
Everything below comes from the instructions for authors, where each item is set out in full.
- 01The manuscript. In Word or LaTeX, double spaced and page numbered, with the title page, abstract of up to 250 words, five to eight keywords, and the sections your format requires.
- 02Figures and tables. Placed in the manuscript for review, with figures also uploaded separately at 300 dpi or better, and tables as editable text.
- 03Ethics and permits. The approvals, permit numbers and welfare provisions that apply to the work, ready to state in the methods.
- 04Accessions. Repository and catalog numbers for voucher specimens, and accession numbers for any deposited sequences.
- 05Declarations. The data-availability statement, funding sources, competing interests, author contributions and any disclosure of generative AI use in preparing the manuscript.
- 06Corresponding author details. A working email address, and the billing contact if an institution or funder would pay a charge on acceptance.
A check worth making
Two questions before you send
Is it in scope? A manuscript is within scope when it addresses a substantive question about animal biology or develops or evaluates a method for zoological research. Scope is about what the study investigates; the strength of its evidence is assessed separately, in review. The full statement is on aims and scope, and the editorial office will answer a question about fit from the title, abstract and keywords.
Do you want double-blind review? Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Ask at submission, and prepare the reviewer file without author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, funding details or institution names, keeping that information on the title page.
After submission
What happens next
- 01Screening. All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
- 02Review. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
- 03Decision. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. The decision letter gives the reasoning and says what a revision would need to address.
- 04Revision. A revised manuscript is returned with a point-by-point response to every reviewer comment.
- 05Acceptance and production. After acceptance the article is copyedited and typeset, proofs are sent to the corresponding author, and the article processing charge of USD 1,200 is invoiced.
- 06Publication. The article appears open access under CC BY 4.0 with the authors retaining copyright, and is registered with a DOI under the publisher prefix 10.14302.
Editorial decisions are independent of article processing charges, membership, editorial or reviewer roles, and any paid service. Payment falls due after a decision to accept has already been made.
