Purpose and readership
The Journal of Antioxidant Activity is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal for studies and critical syntheses of antioxidant activity, oxidative stress, redox mechanisms and antioxidant defense. It connects fundamental chemistry and biology with food, nutritional, pharmacological and biomedical applications.
Its readership includes analytical and natural-products chemists, computational researchers, redox biologists, biochemists, food and nutrition scientists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, clinicians and epidemiologists. Each contributes different evidence to a substantive antioxidant or redox question.
The journal is published by Open Access Pub. Articles are open access from the day they appear, are registered with Crossref under the DOI prefix 10.14302, and are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International with copyright retained by the authors.
Why the journal exists
Antioxidant research spans chemical reactions, cellular defense, dietary exposure, drug effects and clinical outcomes. These questions are related, but the methods used to study them do not support interchangeable conclusions.
For example, a laboratory activity value depends on the preparation, assay and reference standard. A computational prediction depends on the model and its validation, while a population association depends on exposure measurement and the handling of confounding. Each needs transparent methods and an explicit account of uncertainty.
JAA provides a shared scholarly setting for these contributions without requiring every study to use a laboratory scavenging assay or demonstrate a clinical effect. It asks whether the question fits its remit and whether the evidence supports the claim.
Scope and boundary
The journal covers antioxidant chemistry and measurement, natural products and phytochemistry, redox biology, food and nutrition, pharmacology, toxicology and biomedical research. Evidence may be chemical or analytical, computational, cellular or biochemical, animal or preclinical, human or clinical, and population or observational.
A substantive antioxidant, oxidative-stress or redox question defines subject fit. Methods must be appropriate to the study design, and conclusions must remain within its evidence. An incidental antioxidant ingredient or peripheral assay does not establish fit. Product promotion and unsupported health claims are outside scope.
How the journal reads an activity value
Chemical activity, computational predictions, biological mechanisms, population associations and clinical effects support different conclusions. Computational work should describe its model, assumptions and input data, appropriate validation, uncertainty and applicability limits; predictions are not experimentally established effects.
A measured activity is therefore reported as what it is: a property of a compound, extract or system under stated conditions. It is not treated on these pages as evidence of a health effect, and the journal does not publish dietary, supplement or therapeutic recommendations drawn from assay results alone.
Categories accepted for submission
Formats include Original Research; Reviews and Evidence Synthesis; Methods and Protocols; Short Reports and Notes; Case Reports; and Scholarly Discussion. Clinical trials and observational studies are research designs, not separate evidence requirements for every article. What a manuscript declares
Every submission states its question, design, methods, limitations and applicable declarations. For laboratory studies reporting antioxidant activity, this includes:
- Assay and endpoint. The assay system, the endpoint measured, the calibration range, and the reference standard and units against which activity is expressed.
- Material and extraction. The material and the part used, the extraction solvent and conditions, and — for botanical material — the botanical identification and voucher.
- Controls and replication. Positive and negative controls, the number of independent replicates, and how the results of more than one assay agree or differ.
Where solvent polarity or pH is a study variable, report the whole series. Clinical and population studies instead describe participants, exposures or interventions, outcomes, bias and analysis; reviews explain evidence selection and synthesis. Methods and tools need appropriate validation or benchmarking; protocols need a clear rationale, complete planned methodology and analysis. Design-specific preparation requirements are set out in the Instructions for Authors.
Sound replication and non-confirmatory or negative-result studies can also contribute. A new laboratory assay or a new biological mechanism is not a universal submission requirement.
Review, decisions and integrity
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Where double-blind review is requested, authors prepare an anonymized manuscript and supply identifying information separately, and editors ensure that author-identifying information is not shared with reviewers.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Editors do not handle manuscripts in which they have a competing interest, and decisions are independent of fees, services, or any role a person holds with the journal.

The corpus runs from assay chemistry and solvent-series work on plant material, through the oxidative stability of oils and the retention of functional components in food processing, to redox biology in isolated mitochondria — illustrating part of the journal's published history rather than limiting its present scope.
