About the Journal of Sleep And Sleep Disorder Research
A peer-reviewed, open-access journal for sleep as a biological state, for the disorders that interrupt it, and for the measurement that both depend on.
01 · Purpose
What the journal is for
The Journal of Sleep And Sleep Disorder Research publishes peer-reviewed research on sleep: the biological state itself, the circadian systems that time it, the disorders that interrupt it, and the methods by which all three are studied. It exists so that work on sleep as a process and work on sleep as a clinical problem appear in the same place, reach the same readership, and meet the same standard of reporting.
The journal is published by Open Access Pub and has appeared since 2015. Every article is open access from the day it is published: free to read, to download and to reuse with attribution, with copyright retained by the authors.

02 · The field
How sleep research and sleep-disorder research belong together
Sleep science is unusual among biomedical fields in that its basic and its clinical branches record the same thing. A polysomnogram made to study how memory is consolidated overnight and one made to assess obstructive sleep apnea carry the same channels, are divided into the same thirty-second epochs, and are read by the same scoring conventions. The question differs; the record is the same.
The process
Sleep as a biological state
Research on this side asks what sleep is and how it is produced: homeostatic and circadian control, the neurobiology of state transitions, chronotype and entrainment, sleep across development and later life, and the part sleep plays in memory, metabolism and immune function.
Work here is assessed on the quality of its design, its measurement and its reporting. It belongs in the journal on its own terms, with or without a clinical application already in view.
The disorder
Sleep as a clinical problem
Research on this side asks what happens when sleep fails and what can be done: sleep-disordered breathing, insomnia, the central disorders of hypersomnolence, parasomnias and sleep-related movement disorders, and sleep in psychiatric, neurological, respiratory, cardiometabolic, oncological and pain conditions.
Work here meets the same methodological standard, together with the further evidence that diagnostic, causal and treatment claims call for.
Between the two sits the measurement itself: polysomnography, actigraphy, quantitative EEG, ambulatory and consumer sensing, questionnaires and scoring conventions, and the health-services research that determines who is recorded at all. The journal treats that middle ground as a subject in its own right.

Submissions range from single-center clinical studies and case-based observations to multi-center trials, laboratory work and methodological papers. The journal publishes original research, reviews, methods and tools papers, and short communications.

04 · Editorial responsibility
Who decides, and how
Editorial responsibility rests with the Editor-in-Chief, Karim Sedky, and an editorial board drawn from sleep medicine, sleep neurology, insomnia medicine, dental sleep medicine, nursing and allied disciplines. Every member is listed, with affiliation and research focus, on the editorial board page.
- Screening
- All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
- Peer review
- Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
- Decisions
- Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
- Independence
- Editorial decisions are independent of payment. The editors who assess a manuscript take no part in invoicing, and every decision rests on the criteria above.
- Recusal
- An editor who is an author on a submitted manuscript stands aside from its assessment, which is handled by an independent editor.
- Integrity
- Authorship, competing interests, funding and data availability are declared at submission and reported with the published article. The journal’s editorial policies set these requirements out in full.
05 · Accountability
How publication is recorded and funded
Two things make a published article accountable: a permanent address that a citation resolves to, and terms that an author can read before submitting.
Every article is registered with Crossref under the DOI prefix 10.14302, so its citation resolves to a stable address on the publisher’s site. The journal’s ISSN is 2574-4518. The journal’s current position on discovery services and long-term preservation is set out on the indexing page.
Publication is funded by an article processing charge, which applies once a manuscript has been accepted; submission itself is free of charge. The charge depends on the article type and runs from USD 900 for a short communication to USD 1,800 for original research.
