Governance
How the board works
The board's job is to decide what the journal publishes, and to be accountable for those decisions.
- 01Assignment. A submission is assigned to an editor whose own field covers the manuscript's subject and methods.
- 02Screening. All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
- 03Review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
- 04Decision. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
- 05Recusal. An editor with a competing interest in a manuscript — including authorship, a shared institution or a recent collaboration — steps aside, and the manuscript is handled by another editor.
Editorial decisions are independent of article processing charges, membership, editorial or reviewer roles, and any paid service. An editor's own submissions are handled independently of that editor, and holding a role on this board confers no advantage in the review or acceptance of their work.
Reviewer conduct, confidentiality, competing interests, data availability and the handling of corrections are set out in the editorial policies.
Working with the journal
Joining the board or reviewing
The journal welcomes expressions of interest from researchers active in any part of its remit. Appointment follows assessment of a candidate's record by the existing board; an application is the start of that assessment.
